Speedy Giddy sweeps Nexen Tyre Mazda Racing Super Series
Fourteen-year-old Ajay Giddy of Silverdale scored a clean sweep at Round 2 of the 2025/2026 Nexen Tyre Mazda Racing Super Series at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park in North Waikato at the weekend.
The series rookie had a dominant weekend, setting the fastest time in qualifying, winning all three races and recording the fastest lap in each race.
It gave the youngster the round win from Sam Dashfield of Auckland with Simon Baker of Kapiti joining them on the round podium in third. However, after the weekend’s action it is Alex Canty of Auckland who has emerged as the series leader with 191 points, just one ahead of Giddy with Stu Lawton of Paraparaumu third with 186 points.
A large field of twenty-seven drivers contested the round with some great racing throughout all three races.
The first saw Tauranga driver Rex Edwards lead early before Giddy took over at the mid-point of the race to claim the win from Edwards with Dashfield third and James Black of Dunedin fourth.
The top ten finishers had their starting positions reversed for Sunday morning’s race leaving Giddy tenth on the grid. Former champion Simon Baker led early before Black came through to lead for one lap. Giddy made the front on lap six and pulled away to win by 6.182 seconds from Black with Baker third ahead of Dashfield and a close pack of Tomas Climo (Hamilton), Jesse Gould (Raumati Beach) and Callum Pratt (Auckland).
Giddy led all the way in the final race over ten laps to win by 6.189 seconds from Dashfield with Canty third. Baker was fourth ahead of Lawton, Climo and Pratt.
Pratt had arrived at the round with the championship lead only to have his car go to limp mode early in the first race. That consigned him to the rear of the grid for Sunday morning’s race. He managed to salvage two seventh placings on Sunday leaving him fourth in the championship behind Canty, Giddy and Lawton albeit only 7 points behind series leader Canty in what is shaping to be a tight battle.
After two good results in the first two races Black dropped back early in the finale before fighting back to fourteenth.
Edwards received a penalty in Sunday morning’s race dropping him to fourteenth and then failed to finish the third race. He now sits sixth in the series points.
Giddy was the top rookie for the weekend ahead of Black and Climo which is also the series order while Baker was the top Masters (Over 50) competitor ahead of Steve Brown of Auckland and Nigel Edger of Hamilton. Brown now holds the Masters Series lead from Edger after Elton Wichman of Auckland who led coming into the round failed to finish the opening race.
In a touching tribute the field followed Stephen Armstrong’s Allan Moffat tribute Mazda RX7 on the formation lap ahead of Race 2 on Sunday morning before a minute’s silence on the grid to acknowledge Moffat, a four-time Australian Touring Car Champion and four-time Bathurst winner. Moffat passed away on Saturday. He raced a Mazda RX7 in Australia in the 1980’s winning his fourth and final ATCC title in a Mazda RX7 in 1983.
The series takes a break now before resuming at Teretonga Park in Invercargill as part of the Repco NextGen New Zealand Championship from 23-25 January.
